The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Tenth Grade Bleeds By Heather Brewer

Inside Panel:

It's another awful year at Bathory High for Vladimir Tod. The evil vampire D'Ablo is hunting for a ritual that could steal Vlad's powers. His best friend, Henry, doesn't want to be his drudge anymore. And it's getting harder for Vlad to resist feeding on the people around him. With the threat of D'Ablo looming closer and nightmares haunting him each night, Vlad realizes that having a normal high school year is the least of his concerns. He needs to act fast, and even his Pravus powers won't save him this time.

My Favorite Quotes:

"How did you see me, Vladimir? Exactly what were you doing?"
Page 9

"She's not walking with us. Her dad kinda thinks I might be a serial killer."
Page 21

As if Vlad would bite a cheerleader. The thought left a bad taste in his mouth.
Page 24

"Nelly, this isn't what it looks like, I swear. I'm sure it seems we were gorging ourselves on the Johnsons down the street, but we are innocent."
Page 40

"You're absolutely right. Older and able to get into more trouble. Better make it ten."
Page 62

"I wanted to come as the Crypt Keeper."
Page 66

"Thank God the trick-or-treaters left. I'm all out of candy."
Page 85

"Meredith is way too small for dinner. If anything, she'd be lunch, or maybe a big breakfast."
Page 107

"You're a vampire, Vladimir Tod. And I'm going to expose you to the world."
Page 116

"You think you're so special because you can float through mid air and read people's minds. You think you're so great because you can order me around an I have no say at all. I'm sick of it! I'm sick of you!"
Page 125

"Are you done? Or are you planning on ordering me to sit, stay, and roll over for amusement, master?"
Page 143

"You're so goth you don't even know you're goth."
Page 179

"And exactly why is the front of the shirt you wore last night covered in what looks like dried blood."
Page 199

"So you answer to my problem is to put someone else in harm's way? Henry, what if he killed the FedEx guy?"
Page 205

"Am I okay? I'm freaking awesome! How did you do that? You were moving so fast I could barely see you!"
Page 212

"Such fools. Sending a vampire to kill the unkillable. Oh, that's not what they told him -- they ordered him to bring you before them, to be tried for your crimes at last. But this is Ignatius, and his temperament has always run a murderous trail. I quite think they were hoping you'd not survive long enough to face them. Most of them would find it a difficult task o punish a child with the brutality of our laws -- especially the child of a departed friend."
Page 225

(Any more of my favorite quotes would spoil even the spoilers!)

Reaction Timeline:

Chapter 1 -7

Haha, wait wha?

Chapter 8 - 14

Oohs, happy birthday! Wee!

Chapter 15 - 21

He did NOT just say that....

Chapter 16 - 28

Oh! Ha! Take that D'Ablo!!

My Likes:

I'm totally in love with the goth group! Sprat's my favorite of course, well him and Snow.
Also my favorite part!

"So... did you get a look at the woman on that poster?"
Vlad laughed aloud, shaking his head. "Dude, did you see the date on that poster? She's way too old for you."
Page 30

It's not a spoiler, but it's totally hilarious.

My Dislikes:

It's already a given, I totally despise Eddie Poe, but that's so old it's written in the history books.
But for this particular book I have to say that I'm not a Meredith and Vlad couple fan. I don't know why, I just don't like her with Vlad. Too girly.
My least favorite part!

"You were in his mind. He... died before you could withdraw."
Vlad still couldn't make a sound, only nodded feebly. Unbelievably, the pain went on and on, and only Otis's presence brought him any comfort.
Page 224

Again, not a spoiler, well it would be if I noted who died, but you'll have to read and find out for yourself! Aha! Either way, poor Vlad to go through such pain just by being inside the head of he who died!

My Rating:

Just like the two before this one, I over all enjoyed this novel, and look forward to reading the next! 4 out of 5 for you Heather! Great job!

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Ninth Grade Slays By Heather Brewer

Inside Panel:

"If middle school stunk for Vladimir Tod, high school is a real drain. Besides being a punching bag for bullies, he's still stalled with dream girl Meredith, and he's being tailed by a photographer from the school newspaper. Needless to say, practicing his vampire skills hasn't exactly been a priority for Vlad--until now. A monumental trip to Siberia with Uncle Otis is Vlad's crash course in Vampire 101. Training alongside the most gifted vampires is exactly what Vlad needs to sharpen those mind-control skills he's been avoiding. And he'd better get it right, because the battle brewing back home with the slayer who's been stalking him could be Vlad's last."

My Favourite Quotes:

Vlad brought his hand down fast. The slapping sound his palm made when it hit Henry's skin echoed throughout his bedroom but was shortly covered by a yelp from Henry, who sat up, clutching his forehead. "Dude!"
Vlad straightened his shoulders, triumphant in battle. "There was a fly."
Page: 6

Vlad ran his fingers over the closing. Yours in Eternity. It was the same closing his dad had used in every note, every book, every birthday card, he'd ever given to Vlad. Vlad felt the looming shadow of grief sweep over him again. The death of a loved one is funny like that. It doesn't matter how much you grieve or how much time has passed, the littlest reminder of the person who died--a scent, an object, a word--can send you back to the moment you lost them, and before you can blink, you're overcome by the aching sadness you worked so hard to leave behind.
Page: 14-15

Henry nudged him and whispered so that no one else would hear. "So is there any truth to the old vampires-hate-crosses myth?"
Page: 27

Knowing it would be a while before dinner was ready, Vlad lead Joss upstairs, pausing on the steps to scratch Amenti behind the ears. As they passed through the library, Joss gasped. "Wow, you have a great collection of books."
Page: 39

Eddie gripped his camera tightly, but, Vlad noticed, he didn't run. "You're some kind of monster, aren't you? My mom, she says monsters aren't real. But I saw one last year, and now... now I'm seeing another one, aren't I?"
Page: 62

The pain deep in Vlad's chest was much worse than his eye. Not only had he gotten beat up but he had also just been reminded of what a freak he really was by the one person it was supposed to matter to least.
Page: 69

"Oh, he meant it. And he can bite me!"
Page: 82

Vlad watched him and turned to Henry. "I have a problem, Henry."
Henry sighed, watching Eddie, too. "Yeah. And his name is Eddie Poe."
Page: 98

Joss had sulked the rest of the day, but Vlad wasn't about to apologize. Joss had broken the biggest friend code there was: thou shalt not date the girl that thy best friend has a crush on.
Page: 100

After a pause, she gestured with a bent finger for Vlad to come closer. Vlad booked it up the stairs and nearly fell. Twice.
Page: 105

Vlad leaned closer to Otis. "What is it that Vikas keeps calling me?"
Otis smiled. "Mahlyenki Dyavol."
"Yes, but what does it mean?"
Otis and Vikas exchanged glances. Both broke into bemused laughter. Otis raised his glass to Vlad with a drunken grin. "It means 'Little Devil.'"
Page: 133

"Vlad, I've wanted to tell you something since third grade." Henry smirked and moved his arm closer. "Bite me."
Page: 194

All things considered, losing a few hours after school was well worth a stolen moment alone with the girl of his dreams.
Page: 203

Hot tears welled in Vlad's eyes. He brushed them away with the back of his hand and took a slow, deep breath. "People are stupid."
Page: 221

Vlad snorted and slowly lifted his foot. "Don't you find any irony in vampire sucking up?"
Page: 149

"How can you be my friend one minute and my enemy the next? That's not right! It's not fair! Vampire or not, I'm still the same person I was yesterday, the same friend you asked to come with you tonight. I haven't changed, Joss. Why have you?"
Page: 255

Vlad opened his eyes. Sure enough Henry was smiling. After a second, so was Vlad. "I'll sleep when I'm dead."
Nelly shot him a wide-eyed look. "Vladimir! That's not funny!"
Vlad grinned. "Okay, so I'll sleep when I'm undead."
Henry didn't miss his cue. "Too late."

Reaction Timeline:

Chapter 1 - 6

I feel like I've read this before, oh right! Recap! :P

Chapter 7 - 12

I already knew that he was a vampire, but still.. hehe

Chapter 13 - 18

But I thought! He was... but he... was... WHAT!?

Chapter 18 - 23

There are no words for this... but :O

My Likes:

Just like in the first book. Eighth Grade Bites, I enjoy the characters very much. As well as how the events that took place in this book. I can't express how much I myself enjoy Heather Brewer's writing. But I have to point out my favourite part.

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!

"For my job. I'm a slayer." Joss nodded matter-of-factly. "A vampire slayer."
No.
His eyes were clear, cold, and honest. And no matter how hard Vlad tried, he couldn't find a joke within them.
No, no, no. Not Joss.
Page: 209

But I.... but I liked Joss D':

My Dislikes:

I personally don't like Eddie Poe, but that's a given. I mean the kid is like a total nut case, well kinda. Hah. Also my least favourite part!

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!

The man turned around slowly. His black gloves shimered in the low light. His long coat billowed as he moved. Black leather pants clung to his legs, but his chest was bare beneath the coat. Vlad gasped at the large hole in the man's stomach, He had to place his hand over his mouth to contain the scream that threatened to boil up from within him.
D'Ablo smirked at Jasik and then held the vial of blood up to the light. "Then I want to be there to welcome him on bended knee."
Page: 233

For that... you mind as well just bite me. I mean the guy was supposed to DIE!!! But still, a good twist. Touche Heather.... touche!

My Rating:

Ultimately I enjoyed this novel, and I cannot wait to read the next one and blog about it! Aha, until then. Great work Heather! :D

Starling by Lesley Livingston

Note: This review is going to be much different than my others!!!

Before I begin my review I would like to send out a special thank you to Lesley Livingston for not only writing this Novel, but for writing others, which I look forward to reading in the future. <3

Inside Panel:

“Mason Starling is a champion fencer on the Gosforth Academy team, but she’s never had to fight for her life. Not until the night a ferocious, otherworldly storm rips through Manhattan, trapping Mason and her teammates inside the school. She finds herself besieged by nightmarish creatures even more terrifying than the thunder and lightning. The raging tempest also brings a dangerous stranger into her life: a young man who remembers nothing but his name – the Fennrys Wolf. His arrival tears Mason’s world apart, even as she feels an undeniable connection to him. Together, they seek to unravel the secrets of Fenn’s identity, as strange and supernatural forces gather around them. When they discover that Mason’s family – with its dark allegiance to ancient Norse gods - is at the heart of the mystery, Fenn and Mason are suddenly faced with a terrifying future.

Set against the gritty, Shadowed backdrop of New York City, this first novel in award-winning author Lesley Livingston’s epic Starling Saga is an intoxicating blend of sweeping romance and pulse-pounding action.”

My Favourite Quotes:

“She tagged you good, Aristarchos. Which also means she wins, again. Whining about it just makes you look like a girl.” He glanced up at Mason as she pulled of her head gear and grinned. “A girl who can’t fight like Mason.” Page: 2

“Sweating-barfing-screaming-uncontrollably-psychotic-episode not good.” Page” 12

It was a man – a young man – rising from the wreckage in between her and the shambling, gray-skinned apparitions … and he was stark naked. Page: 21

“Do it,” Toby barked at Rory, handing him the metal pipe. “And somebody else find Beowulf here some pants.” Page: 27

It was like some kind of super-tense Mexican standoff, except neither of them had a weapon pointed at the other. Page: 39

Ok, now I know I’m crazy, Fenn thought. Page: 48

Roth. Oh, thank god, Mason thought. Saved. Page: 69

More than “like” Mason Starling. Page: 117

I wanted to…” See you again. Speak to you. Make sure you aren't just another broken memory or piece of a dream. I wanted to return the gear I borrowed.” He held up the shopping bag he’d brought along. Page: 125

“Well it all makes sense now,” Fennrys murmured to himself, stunned by what he’d found. “I’m a ninja.” Page: 161

Cal blinked. “So… no apocalypse.” Page: 171

He remembers something, she thought. Something he doesn't want to tell me. Or doesn’t want me to know… Page: 186

For Mason. The only girl in my world. Page: 219

This is not the first-aid kit of someone who occasionally burns himself making an omelet or gets the odd sliver. Page: 229

“Come on, Mason. I’ll catch you,” He said. “I promise.” Page: 242

“No! I totally would have done that too!” Heather shook her head enthusiastically. “What a great way to get his shirt off. And then you could totally be all ‘oh, baby, does it hurt?’ and sexy-nurse his hot blond hotness.” She leered wickedly. Page: 249

“You know that whole ‘never talk to strangers’ thing, Mase?” Fennrys said in a low voice. “They don’t get much stranger than this.” Page: 283

“I’m your mother and I've been waiting for you…” Page: 341

Who I Kissed By Janet Gurtler

My Review:

Oh geez where in the Sam Hill do I even start? You’re a swimmer, you like a boy. Easy. But there’s more. You go to a party where that boy is, but he’s kissing some other girl, so you decide to kiss some other boy to show him up. But, the boy you kiss starts hyperventilating and reaching for air, so you’re freaking out, the boy dies on the way to the hospital. Everyone blames you because you had peanut butter and he was allergic to it.

So you go on hating yourself and not wanting to do, well anything. You sort of quit swimming, your Dad takes you to a therapist, which helps a little. So you go back to school, of course regretting it as soon as you get there. The people stare at you like crazy, you get called names, and then some other guy in your English class wants to get to know you?! What!?

Ok so apparently you’re working on an English project with this guy, so then why is it when you go to his house to study; he’s totally all over you!? Like kissing and all touch and feel? Whoa! Shake it off girl, shake it off! Alright, alright so things go a little differently than you planned, but it’s okay because you’re using this guy to forget about the boy you like and the boy you think you killed.

That is until he takes you to his house before going to the fair, and well, takes your virginity! By the way you really didn’t like it. Also things slip by and it turns out the guy is a total player! And has his step sister pregnant! WHAT!? Oh and by the way, the boy that you thought you killed. You didn’t kill him. He had an asthma attack. No joke. Still bad, but at least you have no blame right?

Oh by the way you like with your Dad, who had a psychic sister with a little black Chihuahua or whatever. Things are just confusing. But you get by, go back swimming, get the guy and win a gold medal. Cool...?

Oh and another thing... you don’t have a mom... Ouch.

My Likes:

Right off the top, I have to tell all about Zee. He’s just a great guy, puts others first, strong hearted, but still little boy like. Very cute! On top of that he hides his crush on Sam pretty badly, because everyone knows... but Sam. Of course right?

I only like one thing about Casper, that he’s got a nice house. That’s about it.

What else do I like? Um, well I like the writing, it was very well written basically.

My Dislikes:

I’m sorry, but it was way to confusing for me. It was like riding a roller coaster in the dark! It climbs up and then it drops with excitement, but then it goes straight, goes up a little, straight then drops a little. I was like, “wha?” as I read it.

My Rating:

Sadly I have to rate this book a three out of five. As I said it was well written, but it just confused me a little too much. Plus it wasn’t in my personal liking in reading. I’m sorry Janet, but keep your head up okay? Just because I’m not fond of this read, doesn’t mean that others won’t like it. I bet that there will be lots of others that will love your book! Good luck Janet and thank you for the read! I enjoyed it.

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Eighth Grade Bites By Heather Brewer

My Review:
So check it out you’re a Halfling vampire, which sounds pretty cool right? Though there are of course, some issues; your father had secrets and he kept them from you, he and your mother both died in a totally mysterious house fire which only occurred in their bedroom, too bad you had to be the one to find them, plus your English teacher is missing, oh wait no he’s not, he’s dead! So your new English teacher tries to pick on you, because he knows your secret! Yikes! That and he comes to your house and basically tells you that he’s a vampire too! Double yikes! Not to mention he’s your uncle... wait what!?

Your best friend is a human, who you can tell to do your bidding, which you never knew about. Your Aunt gets taken by some high vampire guy, so you get to go save her! Yay! Super hero time! But wait! Your Uncle turns you in to the high vampires? WHAT!? On top of that he makes you think your Aunt is dead, and that your best friend is going to die too!

Relax he saves you in the end, your Aunt is alive and so is your best friend, bonus! But wait, what’s that sound!? Great the high vampire wants to kill you! But you have a black cylinder which he’s afraid of. Odd, it’s just a stick right? But there’s a glyph on it, so you touch it, and BAM burst of really bright light through evil vampire man’s stomach! WHOA!

Okay, that was crazy! So you get home, finish school and find out that your uncle is leaving! Sad day! But on the up side, that girl you like. Like you too, and you’re taking her to the Final Fest dance. Awe yeah!

My Likes:
First of all, how cool would it be to be a Halfling vampire? I’m totally jealous. On top of that, to have your name be Vladimir. Double jealous here. Okay, so all in all I love the characters’’ names!

Also I have to say that the description of the tome, just sounded amazing, I would love to see what Heather Brewer saw in her head when she wrote about it. The whole vampire language too, just out standing.

I got a really good laugh thinking that vampires created Play Station, I know it’s not true, but still! Pretty cool idea don’t you think? Also made me laugh about the city making.

But I have to leave it to my favourite scene, which is when Vlad reads Tom’s mind. No wonder the guy’s a bully! Who would want to have their mom force them into ballet? I love dance, but to be forced to do it, no thanks.
My Dislikes:
Personally I’m not too fond of how the story was opened, it left me rather confused as to what was really happening, but I guess it was meant to do that, because it was basically explained in the end.

The thing with Otis, well he’s just weird. He typically reminds me of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, I mean first he’s one thing... then he’s another? What?

My least favourite part is to deal with poor Henry. I mean the guy just wants to help out Vlad and all, but come on; does Otis really have to call him a drudge? That’s mean!

My Rating:
In general I totally loved this novel! The action was a little slow at first, but that was okay. The suspense was just phenomenal and out standing. So I rate this novel a total of 4 out of 5 stars! Well done Heather Brewer!

Small Medium at Large By Joanne Levy

My Review:As if getting hit with lightning at your mother’s wedding isn’t enough to stuff your taco, but you have to add the topping of being able to hear the dead too! Of course waking up in a hospital would scare the pants off of most anyone, but to hear the voice of your dead grandmother, oy! Not only is she talking, but she wants you to find a new wife for your dad! What!? Pain killers! Sleep! Now!

So you live with your dad, you get home, sleep and wake up to pizza, totally awesome. By now though you’re strangely getting used to hearing your dead grandmother. Okay you get it; your dad needs a girl. Though no matter what you try, the first two dates go horribly wrong for him. Great. On top of that you have this totally hateful hag at school that is just plain mean!

To add to it all, there’s a younger boy ghost who haunts the mean girl because you just want him to leave you alone! So of course he trashes everything for the mean girl who was going to hold a fashion show for cancer! Luckily with your awesome medium skills you work things out with the boy ghost and everything goes well.

A total bonus you get to have a totally fashion icon take over your body to make all the dresses for the show! Plus you get a dress of your own with matching shoes for being nice. Speaking of being nice, the mean girl isn’t so mean after all. You two make friends and everything! Isn’t that great?

Oh and your music teacher? Yeah he becomes famous and gives you, the guy of your dreams, whose mom is dating your dad, and your friends VIP tickets!? Awesome!

My Likes:Even though this book doesn’t fit into the style that I normally read, I rather enjoyed it! I mean if I got struck by lightning and survived to become a medium, I would be totally happy! Such an awesome idea, I wish I’d thought of that.

I have to say that I’m also very glad that Lilah becomes friends with Dolly; I mean that teaches people things you know? Just because someone acts mean, it doesn’t mean that they actually are.

Oh the fashion show chapter was totally my favourite! Even though Liliah’s dad makes a date with Andy’s mom, it was still a great thing to read about. Personally I think a fashion show to raise money for cancer is a wonderful idea.

My complete favourite part in the entire book is when Andy and Lilah become official! The kiss was perfect, and the way they just talked and acted. Made me so jealous!

My Dislikes:Okay I hate to be a buzz killer here, but there was a lot in the book that confused me to no end. I mean the whole thing with Frankie, the music teacher. That was only talked about once, and then in the end he’s a total rock star? Totally cool, but what? How did that happen?

Another thing I didn’t like was how Lilah’s dad ends up dating Andy’s mom, but Lilah is dating Andy. That would break the levels of awkward would it not? I mean I would not want to date a boy who was the son of my dad’s girlfriend! To weird, especially if our parents got married!

Other than that it was pretty good though! :D

My Rating:Sadly I have to rate this book a 3.5 out of 5. Don’t get me wrong here I totally liked it, but there were just some things that left me all confused and questioning.

Keep writing Joanne! I can’t wait to read your next book! :D

False Memory By Dan Krokos

My Review:

Imagine you find yourself lost in the mall in Cleveland, where most of your mind runs blank. You are afraid and unsure of most everything which causes all hell to break loose! Wait that isn't possible right? All you have is a headache, so why are people running away screaming? More confusion hits when a boy waves to you from a table, beckoning you to come closer. He tells you what happened, calling you a "Rose."
[A Rose: Capable of emitting a malignant psychic energy (fear waves). A threat]

He explains to you how you have "forgotten" things from your past. you must escape with him first, so you steal a police car and drive away. As you drive he sticks a needle with lemony yellow liquid inside into your arm, it pains you but you let it slip by, you are too busy driving. For revenge you take the needle and stick him with it just to hear him say. "I already had my shot." Memory shot.

[A Memory Shot: Administered to prevent memory loss when a Rose emits malignant energy, use with caution.]

Along with you there are others, resisters, for you are meant to be a weapon against the world! But fear not, you have friends to fight with you through it all.

This is Miranda North's story, which keeps you on your own toes!

My Likes:

The way that this novel is written peeked my interest high above its normal comprehension. Just the way Peter leads Miranda from the scene of the mall with no panic in his eyes what so ever, just had me going! Above all Peter is my idol in this story, how he is able to explain things that he does, for example. The trackers he placed in Miranda, Noah and Olive's ankles without them knowing was outstanding.

I also fairly well enjoyed how Olive was unable to remember anything after being captured by the clones. Even after having a memory pill from Noah. Due to her having such a high body temperature I find it very well accurate that she would indeed burn off the dosage quicker than the others. I myself have a higher body temperature, so I know what it is like to burn medications off quicker than normal beings.

Now my favourite scene in the entire novel is the dry run fight scenes. From Miranda throwing a guard off a building, murdering her clone, and getting into a fight with Noah's clone! It was so nerve racking I was completely unable to put the book down! Upon them finding Olive with Rhys I actually thought that he was going to kill Miranda and Noah, but when he did not and brought them to his home after the Asian woman committed suicide to hid information, was completely unexpected.

Another favourite of mine is when Peter is saved by Miranda, I thought that was an amazing scene. I just love the Peter and Miranda pair!

My Dislikes:

I have to say that I really did not like Noah. He just reminds me of the controlling, totally jealous boyfriend type, which I believe is what he is. Either way I just don't like him, but I'm glad that Olive does. Speaking of Olive, she dies! Why!? It was a good twist I'll give Krokos that, but come on! She was a great character!

Moving along to Sequel, personally I think was something odd to add. Though perhaps there are better plans for her, I don't know. Having her added though just confused me in general. Also I thought that she should like Rhys, not Noah. The dude should suffer for what he did to Miranda! She died! He basically killed her!

My Rating:

To Dan Krokos' novel False Memory I rate a four out of five. Due to some confusion, but total amazing fight scenes and emotional explosions, literally. I feel he deserves this rating, and I personally cannot wait for his next novel. Good luck and thank you for the most amazing read Dan!
